Analog & Clock Mods for MOTU Firewire Hardware

There has been much conversation lately in the MOTU Mac community about “modding” MOTU hardware to improve it’s analog signal path and digital clock. It’s definitely a very hot topic as the mods cost generally between $250-$400.

Those the do the mods, as well as those that have had the work done, say that the improvements to the analog section have a remarkable impact. There is also an upgrade to the digital clock that claims to greatly reduce jitter (BlackLion Audio feels the clocks are very jittery to begin with).

If, indeed, these mods bring MOTU’s firewire line of audio interfaces (as well as their PCI counterparts) into a class of performance reserved for RME, Apogee and other truly professional, world-class devices, it’s not going to stay a secret much longer!

How To Punch In and Out In Digital Performer

From a recent post on the NextList:

> OK, I can record, but I still suck when it comes to playing. I’m
> trying to figure it out from the manual, but I haven’t dug deep. Is
> it hard?

Easy as can be.

Here’s the toolbar:

DP Toolbar

Use the start and stop locators to define your loop points in the song (so you can just listen to the part you’re punching in (with some pre and post roll to make it easy to fall in and get out).

DP Start Stop

Then click on Loop button:

DP Loop

Then hit the Auto Punch In button:

DP Punch In Button

And then THIS:

DP Project Sequence

Will turn to THIS:

DP Autopunch Points

Set your punch in and punch out points and hit record. It will punch itself in and out automatically.

QUICK TIP:

Hit the 1 key on your numeric keypad on the keyboard to return to the top of the song.

Hit the 3 key on your numeric keypad to engage Record. You can punch manually with the 3 key, I do.

Hit the “.” key on the keypad and the location point will be highlighted so you can manually type where you want to go.

Tax Day = DP5 Day? Also DP5 pricing info…

From a recent MOTU-MAC post:

I got a catalog in the mail yesterday from American Musical Supply and
sure enough, DP5 was in it! I looked on their website and it states
that it will not ship until April 15th. As far as price, they list
the full version at $499 and crossgrade at $299. I think the
crossgrade price was $329 before which is a nice suprise. To me that
means that the upgrade price will either still be $149 or maybe even
less (fingers crossed).

Many of the legion of MOTU audio hardware and Digital Performer users have been holding off on the purchase of a new G5 because of the lack of a PCIe version of the 424 PCI interface card that connects their MOTU audio interfaces to the computer. Well, wait no more!

You can officially pull the trigger. MOTU is shipping their PCIe-424! Cost is $295

Crosby, Gimour & Nash? YES!

I just watched a new video from David Gilmour’s brand new solo album and it features the incredible vocal harmonies of David Crosby and Graham Nash.

Imagine the sound of Pink Floyd and CSN together – well, don’t imagine, go check it out!

You can watch a video clip from Amazon’s page…
